Coming into a feminist conversation with, “Have you considered that sometimes women acquire free drinks at bars?” is like walking into graduate school during Philosophy finals and saying, “Have you considered that the color blue that I see may not be the color blue that you see?”

Imagine you are the guy who just walked into that Philosophy class and laid that shit down. Imagine the class full of students who have worked very hard and committed themselves and sacrificed to be here, students who have spent several years of their lives learning about this subject. Imagine now their feelings when you go to the head of the classroom with a smirk on your face and demand the professor give you an A for effort. Imagine now that they think you are a douchebag asshole, because they do, and because you are. You are a douchebag asshole because you are obviously so self-centered, arrogant, and completely ignorant of the world around you, that you thought you could walk into a high-level course with no background and no work and say something profoundly simplistic and totally unrelated and also everybody should congratulate you for having done this thing, so brave, so provocative.

So the word she wrote isn’t actually “white person”, it’s “foreign devil”, which I kinda think would’ve been even more hilarious.

Swearing in Chinese is always so much more fun.

(Well technically it’s “devil old person”, with the “old person” character acting as synecdoche for the concept of “old foreigner” [think “old chap”, not “old age”] but let’s not quibble.)

The original Tumblr post says 不合作方式 which is a kind of circuitous and super awkward way of saying “uncooperatively”, or maybe “the style/philosophy of not cooperating”. It definitely doesn’t stand on its own as an expression and sounds like it was pulled out of some corporate HR manual, which is its own sort of appropriate. (And would only mean “fuck off” if you stood on your head, spun a few times and squinted really hard, but I digress.)

Matthew Heimbach insists he’s not a racist. This comes as a surprise to his fellow students at Towson University, in the suburbs of Baltimore, where Matthew has formed a group called the White Student Union that advocates for “persons of European heritage”—what most of us call “white people.” It also comes as a surprise to the African American students who feel targeted by the night patrols the senior history major began conducting in March. The patrols target supposed “black predators,” Matthew wrote on the WSU’s website.

“I hate Hitler,” Matthew told me at his apartment, in an African American neighborhood in Baltimore about 15 miles from Towson’s campus. He resents being classified as a “racist” or “white supremacist,” he said, and despises the KKK and neo-Nazi organizations. “They’re just low-rent thugs trying to make themselves feel better. Frankly, they’re an embarrassment.”

Your people are not the ones being targeted on the streets of New York for dehumanizing frisking. Your people are not the ones who will be chased by the LAPD into a cabin and burned alive. Your people are not the ones who will be shot to death for wearing a hoodie in your own neighbourhood. Your people are not the ones who are being beaten to death for loving someone of their same gender. Your people are not the ones who are arrested for botched science experiments and threatened with a felony. Your people don’t get hauled off to prison for uttering threats against the president or the state.

Your people are not the ones who are disproportionally incarcerated for minimal crimes for the sake of the prison industry complex. Your people are not the ones “randomly selected” for secondary screening at airports every single fucking time. Your people will not be the target of violence and hate when someone who looks like you shoots up a school. And when a white guy does blow up a city, you’re just gonna pretend he isn’t white instead. When something happens to one of your kids, the media goes apeshit, while ignoring the gun violence and police corruption that’s taking place in “inner cities” on a weekly, daily, hourly basis.

Your people are not the ones who are all but invisible in America’s boardrooms and courthouses and televisions and movie screens. Your people are not the ones who are harassed by clerks from the moment they enter a retail store till the moment they leave because they might steal something.

Your people ARE the ones that caused a global economic meltdown, and now you’ll take anything away from poor people and minorities and anyone who is suffering in order to avoid paying a cent of tax more to fix this problem that your reckless gambling and blatant lying has caused.

Your people are not the ones who are hardest hit by austerity measures, who still aren’t on their path to financial recovery despite the Dow Jones being at an all-time-high, whose rights to make decisions about their own bodies are being infringed upon by a legislature that would rather be a theocracy than a democracy. Your people are not shamed by your government for every single decision you make, because your people literally define what the Western canon is.

Your people are not left out of the history books, glossed over in a paragraph in a story about your entire society. Your people are not the ones who were killed in the name of property, whose land was stolen from them, who continue to be ignored by the government that wronged them 500 years ago and that continues to deny their existence. Your people are not the ones whose culture is steadily being erased by cultural appropriation. Your people are anything but silent, anything but meek. Your people’s perspective is so entrenched in every bit of media, every word we speak, that you can’t breathe without inhaling the white male gaze.

Your people are a group who has gotten used to being the bully, to having your every whim catered to, to have every book and every movie made about you, to have every governmental institution kowtow to your needs. When people who do not look like you actually get some of those rights you’ve been hoarding to yourself for millennia, your people throw a fucking tantrum because now you actually have to listen to those women and gays and blacks and Hispanics and Asians, because we are fucking people too, as much as you are, and we have just as much of a claim to this country as you do.

Don’t give me any bullshit about your people. You’re done.

Because movies featuring MPDGs are never ever about the MPDG herself, because she is not a person, she is an idea.
